Getting read to publish the siteIn order for people to see the pages you built on the internet you have to publish, or upload, the pages and all of the dependent files to a web server. Dependent files are things like images, CSS files, any media files you have added, such as Flash or QuickTime Movies. GoLive has a built-in FTP, or you can use a program made specifically for ftp like wsFTP and CuteFTP. In order to use any of them you will have to know the ftp address for your ISP's server. This will more than likely be something like ftp.yourISP.com but to be sure you will have to check with your ISP. Most ISPs post this information on their company web sites. You will also need to know your own user name and password. These are most often the same ones you use to log onto the internet. You will also need to know the starting folder, such as public_html or www. Most ISPs require the index page to be named index.htm or index.html but there again you will have to check with the ISP. Your URL is your web site address. Even with millions of pages on the internet, each URL must be unique to allow it to be found. Your URL is something that your ISP must tell you, but it will likely be something like this: http://www.yourISP.com/~username or http://www.yourISP.com/username where "username" is your name you use to log onto the internet. Let's look at using GoLive to publish your site. GoLive has two built-in publish server clients: the Publish Server tab in the site window, and the file browser. We will be using the Publish Server tab in the site window. Look at the Site Window at the Publish Server tab. Since the site has not had publishing set up yet, the window will be blank. Right click anywhere in the Publish Server window and choose Settings.
When the Publish Server settings open, click the Add button, then New, and enter the information you got from your ISP.
Click OK. The Publish Server shows the address:
Right click in the Publish Server window again and choose Connect. (You are probably already connected, but even so it won't hurt to do this step and you will have to do it at other times when you aren't setting up a new publish server.)
